Pigmentation Treatment

Dark spots, also known as hyperpigmentation or age spots, are a common skin problem that can enlarge with age. Dark spots can appear at night and can be seen as an indicator of age. In this medical condition, melanin, the chemical that gives human skin its color, is produced in excess in one area, causing freckles, liver spots, and other dark spots on the skin.

Causes of dark spots:

There are many different types of dark spots, which are due to various factors. The three most common types of hyperpigmentation are:

Lentigos - These dark spots are caused by overexposure to UV rays from the sun. These spots can appear in a scattered pattern and are generally seen in people over the age of 60, although much younger men and women can also have dark spots related to the sun.

Melasma - This type of dark sport is caused by hormonal fluctuations. Women in particular can see dark spots on their skin while their hormones are in motion, especially during events such as pregnancy or menopause. Melasma can also be caused by birth control pills, hormone therapy, or as a result of thyroid dysfunction.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH): These dark spots can occur as a result of trauma to the skin and can be caused by burns, acne, and certain skin care treatments that are harsh on the skin.

Treatment of dark spots:

It should be noted that dark spots are not dangerous in themselves and do not cause health problems. However, some people may want to remove it for cosmetic reasons. In such cases, treatment procedures for dark spots may include:

Prescription drugs: Your doctor may prescribe the use of bleaching creams to make the dark spots disappear gradually. This cream usually contains hydroquinone or retinoids like tretinoin. This treatment usually takes months to show a noticeable effect.

Medical Procedures: There are several medical procedures that can treat dark spots. These may include:

  • Laser treatment to destroy the cells that produce melanin.
  • Chemical peel to burn the outer layer of the skin and grow new layers in its place.
  • Dermabrasion, which helps to scrape off the outer layer of skin so that new skin grows in its place.
  • Cryosurgery, which helps freeze age spots with liquid nitrogen.
  • You can also use over-the-counter creams that can help remove dark spots.
